WARNING: SPOILER ALERT!
In the beginning....
An old man, named Tatsuzu Jinguuji, lived on an abandoned island, and one day while walking along the beach he found a baby boy. This was no ordinary infant, for he grew to be a young man within the span of only 10 nights, this is how Tooya's life began. The old man decides to name the child Tooya, which means ten nights, and Tooya is raised by him.
One day, as Tooya is sitting on the beach, a little girl walks up to him and speaks to him. Tooya is naturally very surprised to see a little girl, in fact he is surprised to see another human being other than the old man, and so he is enthralled by Aya Mikage. Aya gives Tooya a sea-shell, he keeps the shell staring at it longingly each day remembering the little girl who handed it to him, Tatsuzu having told Tooya that her name was Aya Mikage.
On his death bed, 8 years later, Tatsuzu tells Tooya to leave the island, and to learn to live like other people do, to mingle with his own kind. Tooya does so with Aya Mikage in his thoughts the whole time, and so he looks for her, the sea-shell in his possession. However Tooya, while in the middle of the city, drops the shell on the street and while beginning to pick it up is hit by a car. He is rescued from death, however, by Aya's cousin Kagami Mikage.
Unfortunately Tooya lost his memory because of the accident and cannot speak even his own language except for the words Mikage, and Tooya. Eventually Alec discovers that Tooya's IQ is very high and so his education was quickly taken care of, in conjunction with this, Tooya is trained to be an assassin in the service of the Mikage family. He was told that the Mikage family had the power to reinstill his lost memory and in exchange for his services for them, they would return his memory to him.
Another fated meeting with Aya occurs as he saves her from an oncoming speeding car (many many car accidents in this @_@). And yet again they meet when Aya and Aki are present at the Mikage house for their birthday; he is the one bearing the parcel with the mummified hand over to the twins. Tooya's meetings and relationship with Aya progresses as the story does, where he starts showing emotions toward Aya, and becomes less of a cold person it seems. At one point, Tooya tells Aya that he chooses her over regaining his past.
Shortly after Tooya's confession of his feelings toward her, Aya and some others go to Miho looking for some clues and information about the tennyo's hagoromo. Yuuhi ends up saving Miori Sahara, who bears an uncanny resemblance to Aya, from drowning. Tooya disappears after receiving a flood of memories of his past life, where he remembers being Tooya Mizugi and that Miori is his girlfriend, consequently forgetting all about Aya. Yet the memories that he "regained" were in fact fabricated and implanted within him while he was being treated by the Mikage.
The persona Tooya Mizugi never existed, and Miori in actual fact is Aya's cousin, who wanted revenge on the death of her parents at Aya and Aki's birthday at the Mikage family household. In a last attempt to achieve her goals Miori kills herself in order to make Aya feel guilty for her death, while Tooya rescues Aya from the Mikage family. After that Tooya leaves to find himself, the ocean being his only link, there he meets Mai Jinguuji, the grandaughter of the old man who raised him. After saving her from the boys who were harassing her, Tooya stayed at Mai's house, much to the displeasure of Mai's best friend Masato. Mai falls for Tooya because he is the only man who didn't fall victim to her latent tennyo power, which is attracting the other sex.*
Shieru, Mai's tennyo form, promises Tooya his memories back if he can find her hagoromo for her. Tooya protects Mai from the Mikage henchmen, and speaks to Masato where she tells him not to give up on Mai. After a big lengthy battle with the Mikage agents, the Mai/Masato saga ends happily and Tooya continues to battle the Mikage.
